What is Reiki?
Originating in Japan by Dr. Mikao Usui, Reiki uses a light-touch hands on and/or hands off approach when it comes to healing. Reiki is an energy-based relaxation modality and is the belief that we have unseen life force energy that flows through us and which can be transferred from one person to another. It is a tool to help one develop conscious awareness, release withheld emotions and energy blocks, and create a sense of overall balance.
The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words put together. “Rei” (ray) means higher power or wisdom of God and “ki” (key) is life force energy. Put them together and you get “spiritually guided life force energy.
When our “ki” is high and flowing freely around our whole energy body, we feel:
Full of energy
If our “ki” is low, or if there is a blockage in its flow, we are:
Vulnerable to illness or disease
Reiki supports medical treatments, often improving or eliminating the unwanted side-effects of any needed drug-therapy. Pain relief is another thing Reiki provides. A feeling of overall good health is often felt after several sessions.

What is a session like?
During a session, the client lays fully clothed on a massage table. The session uses a light touch above or on the energy centers of the body to facilitate balance, harmony and relaxation. Soft scents, music, and lighting deepen the relaxation response. The only thing you have to do in a Reiki session is simply relax. Reiki sessions allow for deep relaxation time and that allows access to the subconscious, where positive changes can happen. Some people fall asleep for part of the time or drift in a state that hovers between wakefulness and falling asleep. If you fall asleep during Reiki, that is okay. Reiki works the same whether we are aware of it during our session or not.
Reiki has been described to me by my clients as a tingling sensation, waves, or water flowing along limbs or the entire body. It can feel warm or cool. Some people feel themselves floating or that negativity was lifting. Some people describe colors that they see with their mind’s eye. Sometimes there is an emotional release in the form of tears or laughter, and that is okay, too.
How do I know if Reiki is working?
It is believed that Reiki goes where it is needed for your highest good. Many people say they feel more energetic, have less physical pain, a speedier recovery, and some report having emotional release. Sometimes the effects are subtle. It works differently for each person. When you relax, receive and go with the flow, you will gain more insight, healing and answers.
How often should I get Reiki?
It is not possible to get too much Reiki since it is a gentle healing tool. It will greatly depend on your situation. We can discuss that together and come up with a schedule that is right for you.
